This is my first attempt into what seems an abyss, but I am hoping will be an exciting ride and exploration. I chose the Jestsons as a name for what are probably obvious reasons. They are living in the future that may well be ours sooner than we want, and in fact, in some ways, is already here. But importantly, the future doesn’t change in essence who they are – a family with all the flaws and problems that we all face, despite the technology. So if the Jetsons can survive the future – albeit it is a cartoon – I’m sure we all can. Sure, there’ll be a few hiccups along the way, but who wants a perfect life. I am in awe of cartoonists who are able to dream the future well before their time. Someone once wrote that if you can dream it, it can happen. We need to dream a future – we can’t expect that life will remain in a bubble belonging to a romanticised time which blocks out the deficits. It is better to embrace the present and help imagine the future. I don’t want to wake up one day and not recognise the world in which I live. I want to be energised and excited by my environment and feel that I can contribute, engage and understand it. I hope you are excited by the future also. And if we don’t always get it right, remember, neither did George.
